Fun fact: The word “soccer” had its origins in England in the 1880s as a shortened form of “association football” to distinguish it from rugby football (more commonly known only as rugby.)

Nah, soccer is correct.
Football simply means a sport played on foot as opposed to on horseback.
Soccer on the otherhand (as Global said) is a British word.

You did not, and I did not say that it is exclusively a British word.

It was coined by the British, but it’s used in most English speaking countries, and from my understanding it’s used in Japan as well.
