Because I can. The JT8D was nearly 20 years old by the time the MD-80 came out. It fits with the DC-9 and OG 737, and I’ll admit, they look ok on the MD-80 but they were old technology by then. That would be like Boeing using the same engines on two generations of the 737. Oh wait, they did.
737 classic is still better though.
The JT8D of the MD-80 have significant improvements over the original JT8D of the 727, DC-9 and 737-200, just like the CFM56 of the 737NG over the CFM56 of the 737 Classic.
