Hong Kong’s whole existence as a megahub was because of the Brits (and guess who killed it, starts with a Chi and ends with a na), and only the area from Boundary Street up to the modern border was leased, for 99 years. Everything below, the Skyscrapers of Central, the shopping malls of Causeway Bay and the residential area was officially ceded forever but if the Brits did stay that’ll still be better than the police state that is now HK.
Now for China.
While in the talks “to return (read: steal)” HK to China, they promised to keep the way of life of HKers to be the same until 2047. That was a lie. Since HK’s importance was more needed by the Chinese back then, as it accounted for 25% of China’s whole GDP in 1997 (approx.), which means that the Chinese couldn’t break any freedoms, because HK was important for them back then and they could maybe just hold off for a bit

Which leads to more protests, but now for Pro-Democracy reasons, all the way up to 2019, where the, possibly, most famous protests happened, and we all know how that went. Now the puppet government just arrests pro-democracy leaders and forces pro-democracy politicians to either leave the main pro-democracy party or be forced to turn in 12 months in wages
