Well layout is similar to the 707 with 3-3 seating, but the 757 is capable of serving airports with a shorter runway and smaller gates (which is why it replaced the 727, since it was similarly built for that).
With the range and power, it’s not really comparable to any other aircraft nor will it ever be completely replaced even with the new 757.
Boeing made a heck of a great plane, especially when paired with its sibling the 767
