TWA designed and helped fund MCI.
Then when security was introduced in the 70s there wasn’t enough room for the 747 passengers and everything else at the airport inside, so they asked the city to rebuild the 3 terminals that were only a few years old 
City said no because it would cost too much so they left MCI and made STL their hub
