They didn’t actually announce the retirement of the 747, a possibility could be that they needed extra cargo capacity in the long run and are planning to fly both types for the foreseeable future.

For UA, it’s the A321XLR and the 737 MAX replacing the 757; the standard A321neo will replace older A320/319s.

Why use the XLR as a 738 replacement. That makes no sense. I could see the normal neo, but using the XLR for short flights is just dumb.
