i agree that the design is not the best

but they were iconic, like very iconic
in the 80’s and 90’s over 1000 of them ruled mumbai’s roads and streets

now only 50 remain, most of them rotting in depots and very few in service
along with that there are 2 golf carts with 198 on order

when you give a contract to some roadside 1 star rated coachbuilder :

went on them today on 25
probably my last ride on them :sob:

B.E.S.T just got ~20 new BS6 Tata LP918’s with 2x2 seating built by some random bus builder that resemble the new Magna series of buses and they are ugly, have a poor build quality

The original 10m Magna’s built by Tata are better in every sense and even the older ones of B.E.S.T are better lol

Older LP918 BS4 CNG of B.E.S.T

New LP918 BS6 CNG buses of B.E.S.T

Let me join by showing you the buses from my city (which has roughly 90k residents)! They are brand new Mercedes-Benz Citaro Hybrids, that don’t even have 2 years lol. And this down there is a photo from when the buses first arrived in the city (route 5 and 13 have been both modified and extended since lol)

Mumbai’s most hated buses
KingLong JC12HD built by JCBL under their Cerita brand

Kept breaking down, poor AC which didn’t work, couldn’t exceed speeds of 30kmph and stalled frequently on slopes
Some even had leaking roofs lmao

Only 5 out of the 300 bought remain

with AC removed

very nice

here some stops have screens connected to the chalo app which displays next bus arrival and route
and the app also alerts you when the bus arrives at your stop

and buses have PIS and ITS systems in them with announcements and a display

B.E.S.T Air conditioned buses from 1996 to present

Ashok Leyland Viking Super
The first aircon bus type in the fleet
Used to operate on 4 really long routes during rush hours only

Ashok Leyland-Iveco Sitibus
Only 1 was inducted for trials. No one knows what happened to it.

Tata LPO1624 Starbus bought in 2005. These buses used to operate on BRT (which was not a proper BRT) routes but were retired and scrapped in like 5 years because the project failed.

KingLong CERITA JC12HD
The worst and most hated buses of B.E.S.T
Used to operate on ~300ish routes
All have been scrapped

image
Volvo B7RLE 8400
Only 5 were bought and all were with Oshiwara Depot operating on AS-4 and Fort Pheri services
Scrapped in 2018

Tata Starbus Hybrid bought in 2017
25 are currently in the fleet (with possibility of more being ordered in the future) and connect BKC with other parts of the city like Mulund (W), Andheri (E) etc

Force Traveller Smart Citibus bought in 2017
These buses are very popular on Railway/Metro station <-> Residential/Commercial area routes and operate at high frequency on those short routes. Many were even converted into ambulances during COVID-19 pandemic.

Tata Marcopolo built Tata LP918 BS4 CNG
These are also very popular buses, especially on longer routes. Recently, BS6 versions were also bought by B.E.S.T.

Tata Starbus Ultra Electric 12m and 9m EV’s bought in 2021. A total of 340 are in the fleet, mostly operating in Borivali, Powai, Andheri, Colaba, Backbay, Worli and Shivajinagar areas providing high frequency services on both long and short routes.

Olectra K7D and K9D eBuzz bought in 2020. The K7D’s mostly operate in the Sion-Dharavi, Colaba/CSMT, Backbay and Kalakilla areas providing frequent services on long and short routes. The K9D’s only operate on C-42E and C-72E routes as only 20 have been delivered and there is an order for 2100 such buses to replace older buses in the fleet.

SWITCH EiV22 double decker inducted in 2023. 22 such buses are currently active, replacing the older double deckers. They are mostly found on A-117, A-115 , A-138 and the heritage tour routes. 200 have been ordered with a tender for 900 more in process.

Tata LP918 BS6 CNG widebody bought just last month. Around 300 such buses will be joining the fleet. Currently there are 20 buses, all with Deonar depot, operating on A-382 and C-60E routes providing frequent services on both.

We can’t forget the Chalo Bus services, which provide comfortable services on long business district <-> residential areas and residential areas <-> airport routes. Currently 60 buses operate on 18 routes, most operating 24x7.

Along with them, B.E.S.T is planning to retrofit all their Tata LPO1618’s and LPO1613’s with aircon units.
